Pond filters need to be cleaned or backwashed at least monthly to remain effective at removing particles from the water. Filters also provide essential biological filtration which will remove toxic ammonia and nitrites from the water through a natural process which requires the presence of beneficial bacteria and plenty of oxygenation of the water.
Hair Algae, String Algae and Blanket Weed are persistent problems in sunny Southern California ponds. There are safe chemical controls which should be used proactively to prevent these unsightly algae. In our experience there are NO effective non-chemical controls to get rid of algae. We recommend Pond Blocks or Algae Fix. Pure pond salt can also be used to control some algae but should only be applied if you own a salt meter and posses a complete understanding of pond water chemistry. A qualified pond service can manage algae in your pond so you can simply enjoy it.
